How Salaries Work in Sri Lanka in 2026

Every SalaryLK guide quotes gross monthly pay in Sri Lankan rupees (LKR), which is what employers advertise and what appears on your offer letter. What reaches your bank account is lower, because two deductions come off gross pay each month: the employee EPF contribution and APIT income tax.

EPF and ETF. You contribute 8% of gross salary to the Employees' Provident Fund. Your employer adds a further 12% to EPF and 3% to the Employees' Trust Fund. The employer contributions are paid on top of your salary, so they raise the cost of employing you but do not reduce your take-home pay. Use the EPF and ETF calculator to see your own balance build up.

APIT (PAYE tax). Under the 2025/26 and 2026/27 rates the first LKR 150,000 a month is tax-free. Income above that is taxed in bands starting at 6% and rising to 36%. Most salaried workers in Sri Lanka earn below the threshold and pay no income tax; the tax calculator shows the exact figure for any salary.

Minimum wage. From 1 January 2026 no private sector worker can be paid less than LKR 30,000 a month or LKR 1,200 a day. Government employees are paid on fixed salary scales set by public administration circulars, which our government salary scale guide lists code by code.

How to use these salary guides

Start with the job salary guides for a role's pay from entry level to senior, then narrow it down. Experience guides show how pay changes year by year, location guides compare Colombo with other districts, and company guides cover large employers such as banks, telcos, apparel exporters and IT firms. If you are planning a career change, the career guides set out the qualifications, routes and costs, and the course guides list fees for the main professional programmes.

Salary ranges for government roles follow published scales. Private sector ranges are editorial estimates based on public information, so treat them as a guide to negotiate from rather than a guaranteed offer. Our editorial policy explains how figures are compiled and updated.

Salary in Sri Lanka: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the average salary in Sri Lanka?

According to the Department of Census and Statistics Labour Force Survey 2025, the mean monthly gross salary of monthly-paid employees was LKR 65,325 and the median was LKR 55,000. Pay is higher in urban areas and in Colombo district, and professional roles in IT, medicine, banking and engineering pay well above the national median.

What is the minimum salary in Sri Lanka in 2026?

From 1 January 2026 the national minimum wage for private sector workers is LKR 30,000 a month or LKR 1,200 a day, under the National Minimum Wage of Workers (Amendment) Act No. 11 of 2025.

How much tax do I pay on my salary in Sri Lanka?

Under the 2025/26 and 2026/27 APIT rates the first LKR 150,000 a month (LKR 1,800,000 a year) is tax-free. Above that, income is taxed at 6% on the next LKR 1,000,000 a year, then 18%, 24% and 30% on the next LKR 500,000 each, and 36% on the balance. On a gross salary of LKR 200,000 the APIT is about LKR 3,000 a month.

How much are EPF and ETF deductions?

The employee contributes 8% of gross salary to EPF, which is deducted from pay. The employer adds 12% to EPF and 3% to ETF on top of the salary, so these do not reduce take-home pay.

Which jobs pay the highest salaries in Sri Lanka?

Senior software engineers and IT managers, specialist doctors and consultants, corporate lawyers, finance directors, airline pilots and senior bankers are among the highest earners. Roles at multinational and export-oriented companies usually pay more than the same role in a local firm.

How does SalaryLK estimate salaries?

Government salaries come from published salary scales and circulars. Private sector ranges are editorial estimates built from public information such as job advertisements, company disclosures and industry reports, and are reviewed and updated during the year. See the editorial policy for details.
